Contrary to what TikTok might tell you, less is definitely more when it comes to your skincare routine.

Overcomplicating your routine with endless steps, new products, and intense actives doesn’t necessarily mean better results. In fact, a minimalistic skincare approach tends to be all you need for happier, healthier, more balanced skin..

The Problem with Overcomplicating Skincare

Using too many products or layering multiple actives doesn’t just hurt your wallet, but it can also hurt your skin barrier. That means more irritation, breakouts, and just general confusion.

While you can never have too many pizza toppings, the same can’t be said for your skincare. Too many clashing actives can wreak havoc. Sure, a long skincare routine may give you a few extra minutes away from your kids as you hide in the bathroom, but it could be doing more harm than good—especially if it is unsustainable.

The Case for Simplicity

Balance, consistency, and skin that thrives.

When you streamline your skincare routine and focus on the essentials, your skin (and brain) thank you. Simpler routines promote balance and consistency. It’s the ultimate dream team for your skin.

Bonus perks?

  • Avoid unnecessary irritation: Less products means less chance of irritation from clashing actives, overloading or breaking your skin barrier

  • You’ll save money: Fewer products means spending less on products that might be doing you more harm than good

  • And reclaim some precious bathroom shelf space (your partner will thank us).

The Core Essentials You Really Need

A truly effective skincare routine does not need to be 10 steps long, so let’s break down the three non-negotiables for a minimalist but still effective routine.

Cleanser: Choose a gentle and pH-balanced cleanser to set the stage for your routine.

Moisturiser: All skin types (yep, even oily ones) need hydration. Pick one that is suited to your skin type, environment, and preference.

SPF: Your daily non-negotiable. A broad-spectrum SPF will be your skin’s best long-term investment.

Once you have a solid super trio, then you can consider adding targeted treatments like serums,, but only if your skin actually needs it.

Tips to Streamline Your Routine

Not every product deserves a place in your bathroom cabinet. Take stock of what you actually use, and ask yourself:

Does this product actually spark joy for my skincare goals?

And if you don’t have any skincare goals, now is the perfect time to make some. Maybe it’s hydration, calming, redness reduction or less breakouts.

A few key reminders when streamlining your routine:

  • Duplicates ≠ double your results. Most products are already carefully formulated with the right balance of active ingredients to work effectively on their own, so doubling up doesn't actually boost results, but may actually just piss your skin off

  • Avoid layering products with the same active ingredients as there’s a good chance they will overwhelm your skin and lead to irritation. Layering can also impact pH levels, which affects the efficacy of your products and can stop them working their best. Using them on alternate nights or splitting them between morning and evening is totally fine

  • Overdoing it with the exfoliators—over-exfoliation can damage your skin barrier. This happens when you overuse your exfoliators, and you end up removing the skin’s surface layer, causing redness, dryness, irritation, and increased sensitivity. Maybe even breakouts or tight, waxy appearance in some cases

  • Introduce new products one at a time (despite their charming peachy goodness) and patch test. Always!

And remember,  just because something’s trending (glazed donut skin, anyone?) doesn’t mean it’s right for you. The only trend worth following is the one that supports your own skin needs.

How Minimalism Benefits All Skin Types

Yes, even your hard-to-define-sometimes-dry-but-also-oily-in-certain-climates skin.

Best of all?

minimalist routine works for everyone (hallelujuha). Sensitive, Acne-prone, dehydrated, oily… every skin type benefits from a pared back routine. Keeping things simple reduces inflammation, supports your skin barrier, and encourages consistency—which helps you stick to habits that actually work for your skin.

Just like the simple pleasures in life, simple skincare fosters mindfulness and sets you up for happy, healthy skin long-term.

It’s As Simple As That

Sometimes, less really is more. A minimalist skincare routine isn’t just a trend, but rather a mindset that supports healthier skin, better habits, and a bucketload less stress.
