How To Get Rid Of Blind Pimples

How To Get Rid Of Blind Pimples

In the interest of not letting these little bastards ruin my face for 10 days, here's how to get rid of blind pimples. The technique works, which is the good news, provided I DO NOT pick at it, which I won't. The bad news is that I have been known to pick at it.

So, What IS A Blind Pimple?

Blind pimples are those deep, painful under-the-skin lurkers that don’t have a visible whitehead yet but absolutely do have the audacity to hurt when you accidentally touch your face.

Unlike regular surface-level pimples, blind pimples sit deeper in the pore, which is why they can feel swollen, tender and weirdly impossible to get rid of overnight.

What Causes Blind Pimples?

Blind pimples can happen when oil, dead skin cells and bacteria become trapped deep inside a pore, causing inflammation beneath the surface of the skin, which explains why they feel sore, swollen and impossible to ignore despite not actually looking like much yet.

Hormones can also play a role here, particularly during periods of stress, lack of sleep, puberty, your period or honestly just generally existing as a human being. Heavy skincare, pore-clogging makeup, sweat, friction and touching your face too much can all contribute to it.

Basically, your skin gets congested, the pore gets angry and suddenly you’ve got a painful underground situation brewing on your chin eight hours before your date.

Tips To Get Rid Of Blind Pimples Early

Here are a few genuinely useful tips to get rid of blind pimples before they become full-blown face volcanoes:

  • Always keep your hands off them. Touching, poking and “just checking if it’s ready to go yet” usually makes inflammation worse and introduces more bacteria to the area. Trust me, I should know.

  • Avoid aggressive scrubs or harsh exfoliants. Your skin is already irritated enough without being attacked with acids layered on acids.

  • Change your pillowcase regularly. Oil, sweat, skincare and bacteria build up faster than you think.

  • Stick to gentle, consistent skincare. Calm, balanced skin tends to heal far better than skin being bullied by twelve active ingredients at once.

  • Don’t overload the area with six different spot treatments at once. More product does not automatically equal faster results, unfortunately.

Blind pimples respond surprisingly well to calm behaviour (as with all things in life).

When Should You Leave A Blind Pimple Alone?

Honestly? Most of the time.

If the spot is still hard, shiny, red or painful, it’s not ready. Trying to force it before it’s ready can push inflammation deeper into the skin and increase the chances of lingering pigmentation or scarring.

Step-By-Step Guide On Blind Pimple Extraction

Once your pimple is semi-visible, here’s how to extract it and prevent scarring.

1. While it's just a painful, red, half-bump: ice it and reduce the swelling

This is crucial, this bit. If you play this right, it might not Vesuvius all over your face. So: take an ice cube, and wrap it in a tissue. Hold it on the spot for five minutes on, 10 minutes off. Do this at least three times in a row if you can. Drink lots of water.

2. When it starts to show a head, you need to carefully, gently get The Monster up to the surface

After a shower (the steam assists greatly in the drawing-out process), take a clean face cloth or a thick cotton pad and dip it into a sink of hot but not-too-hot-to-touch water. Hold this compress on the pimple for as long as possible. Re-dip in the water when it cools down. Do this for at least five minutes.

3. Now apply a drawing paste or replenishing clay mask (The Removalist, obviously).

These are usually made of things like clay, sulphur and zinc oxide. Apply to the head of the pimple with a cotton tip. (If you're using a clay mask, leave it on for 10-15 minutes, then remove. If you're using a drawing paste, pop it on and go to bed so it can do its work.) You will have either a very obvious whitehead in the morning, or, as sometimes magically happens, just some faint redness, because it's matured the whitehead so fully that it's completely gone.

4. When the whitehead is right at the surface, it's time to carefully extract

If things are still red and tender, or shiny and taut, no touchy touchy. It's not ready. Conceal it and repeat the drawing process that night/as soon as it's viable.

If the whitehead is more evident than redness, and it's trying to jump out of your skin, you're ready, sugar.

Do the hot water compress biz from above for a couple of minutes, then wrap half a tissue around each of your index fingers. Put a finger on each side of the whitehead, then carefully, very gently, with NO NAILS DIGGING IN, push down on the sides, then kind of roll your fingers upwards to encourage the head to pop out. The idea is to get down deep on the sides and push the very bottom of the whitehead up and out. Do the same motion from a few different spots to share the pressure (and fun!) around.

You should see no blood. There shouldn't even be indentations where you've been pushing: it has to all be very gentle.

5. Finishing up and preventing scarring…

This bit is important, you guys. Once you've popped, it's all open to bacteria, so be sure to lock that shit well out.

First, apply a bit of pressure on the spot to stop any potential bleeding or swelling and redness. Then wipe on some purifying lotion with a cotton ball or pad.

Now leave it alone for a couple of hours. It needs to heal and breathe. So no makeup, nothing. (Extractions are always best done at night.) Once the area is flaking a bit and dry, use a deliciously nourishing and soothing face oil (Face Hero, obviously) and a replenishing, antioxidant-rich face cream (Very Useful Face Cream, obviously) on the area to encourage healing and scar reduction.

Ingredients That Help Support Acne-Prone Skin

If you’re wondering how to get rid of blind pimples without absolutely annihilating your skin barrier in the process, certain ingredients can help calm congestion and support clearer-looking skin.

A few worth knowing:

  • Salicylic acid: Helps exfoliate inside pores and clear excess oil

  • Niacinamide: Supports the skin barrier and helps calm visible redness while keeping skin feeling balanced

  • Clay and sulphur: Commonly used in masks and spot treatments to absorb excess oil and reduce congestion

  • Hyaluronic acidHydrates skin without heaviness, which is important because dehydrated skin can become even more stressed and reactive

  • Ceramides: Help support the skin barrier while skin heals, particularly if you’ve accidentally gone a bit too hard on active ingredients

The key here is balance. Overdoing active ingredients can leave your skin dry, irritated and somehow producing even more oil out of pure spite.

FAQs

What is a blind pimple, and why does it form?

A blind pimple is basically a breakout that develops underneath the skin instead of right on top of it. They’re usually caused by trapped oil, bacteria, dead skin cells or hormonal fluctuations, which creates inflammation deep within the pore.

How can you reduce swelling and redness of a blind pimple quickly?

Ice is your best friend here. Wrap an ice cube or cold pack in a clean cloth and hold it against the area for short bursts to help calm swelling and redness.

Does icing a blind pimple help prevent it from getting worse?

It can help reduce inflammation, particularly in the early stages. It won’t magically erase the pimple overnight, but it may help calm the area and stop things from escalating into full angry mountain territory.

How do you bring a blind pimple to the surface safely?

Warm compresses help soften the skin and encourage the blockage to move upward naturally. Steam from a shower helps too. The important bit is patience. Not violence.

What products help draw out a blind pimple overnight?

Clay masks, sulphur treatments and hydrocolloid patches are commonly used to help absorb excess oil and support the healing process overnight.

When is a blind pimple ready to be popped?

If it’s still painful, shiny, red or hard, leave it alone. If a visible whitehead has formed at the surface and the surrounding redness has settled down, it may be ready for a very gentle extraction.

What is the safest way to extract a whitehead without causing damage?

Warm compress first, clean hands second, gentle pressure third. No nails. No aggressive squeezing. No bathroom breakdowns.

How do you treat skin after popping a pimple to prevent scarring?

Keep the area clean, hydrated and protected. Avoid picking at dry skin while it heals, and wear sunscreen daily to help reduce the appearance of post-breakout marks.
